A Forward Deployed Engineer, or FDE, is an engineer who works close to customers to make a product or technical platform solve a real operational problem. The role connects software implementation with understanding workflows, integrating systems, and helping people use the result.
Forward deployed describes where the work is focused: near the customer’s environment and needs. It does not mean every FDE physically works on site, and it does not mean every FDE builds AI. This roadmap focuses on AI delivery while teaching broader engineering and customer-delivery skills.
Imagine a support team whose documents and tickets live in separate systems. An FDE learns the current process, checks access and data quality, builds an integration, tests it with users, and prepares a handoff. The work continues beyond a convincing demo because the customer needs something operable.
Exercise: describe the support team’s problem in one paragraph without choosing a model or framework. List the people and systems you would need to understand.
Check: you can explain the FDE role through responsibilities and outcomes before talking about specific tools.
